CUF was born in 1968 to bear public witness of fidelity to Peter when theologians revolted against Humanae Vitae. In the decades since, it gave the Church the definitive lay answer to the Lefebvrists — The Pope, the Council, and the Mass — and helped launch FOCUS and Emmaus Road Publishing.

"I will have nothing more to do with him."

In 1971 CUF's founder, H. Lyman Stebbins, hosted Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre for five days. Moved by his piety at Mass, Stebbins was then troubled to hear him spread gossip against the Pope — and concluded there was "a schismatic spirit in him which was potentially dangerous." Fifty-five years later, that judgment stands.
